Share your views: local hospice care
Changes to palliative care
Palliative care is the provision of treatment and support to people who are facing problems associated with a life-limiting illness. It focuses on improving quality of life by managing symptoms, relieving pain and addressing any side-effects of a patient’s condition. It also provides emotional and practical support for patients, families and carers.
Community specialist palliative care includes services for people outside of hospitals, such as in their homes, care homes, or hospices. NHS North West London are currently running a consultation about hospice services, and propose not reopening the Pembridge Palliative Care Service which was previously closed due to staffing shortages. You can read more about these developments here.
Our project
Healthwatch Westminster and Healthwatch Kensington & Chelsea are carrying out a joint project to ensure that local voices are included in the decision-making process before long-term changes to hospice care are agreed.
As part of our engagement, we are seeking to capture the views of patients, carers, relatives and service providers to understand the impact that the closure of Pembridge Hospice is having on community palliative care and residents’ wellbeing. We also aim to assess the quality of current palliative care services and alternatives since the Pembury Hospice closure and identify gaps in current health care provision.
Our findings will feed into the recommendations that we will share with the NHS North West London Integrated Care Board and the council to ensure that service providers are incorporating residents’ voices throughout the decision-making process for improved service provision.
